Yeah, I’m posting it a bit early. Lunchtime meeting is going to get in the way, so here we go!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The estimated cost of repair is $10,007.31.
Congratulations !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !
Congratulations to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !
[UPDATE: Yeah, I goofed. Galileo had the winning vote with $10,000.28. Somehow, I missed it.]
But the story isn’t over! The repair estimate doesn’t include any repairs to the rear suspension or drivetrain components. The body shop will file for a supplement once they put it on a lift and start taking it apart to assess the full damage.
This number is going to go higher. Probably a LOT higher.
For those who are curious, the breakdown of the votes is below. If two votes were cast with the same number and they didn’t update this morning, I used the one which posted first. The ones which are crossed out were disqualified. My condolences go out to Brian Silvestro. His vote came in after Clayton’s and he didn’t revise his vote this morning. Better luck next time.
Next time? Sure! We’ll play again when I receive the updated estimate.
Thanks for playing!

I’m surprised that I’m the only one who suggested 1 million dollars.

Woohoo! But seriously, I hope you get your car back together soon man, I know the feeling of waiting on the insurance machine to do its thing.

Damn. That is high for not including suspension/drivetrain.

If there is frame/Uni-body damage I would push to have them total it out. I can’t see it ever driving right after that.

68 hours in labor!!!!
It looks like a minimum of $2g for labor and lets say $3g for parts (which is on the very cheap side)...you’re getting close to totalling it.
I always wondered about the qualifications for totalling a car. I thought it was 50% of the value of the car... is it 75% of the value PRE-accident? I figure the fact it would have an accident on record would hit the value of the car at least a few grand...do they take that into account?

OH SO CLOSE. I was gonna go with 12k, I bet it finishes around there maybe with the suspension bits and bobs.

That’s my biggest concern. I know the rear suspension is tweaked. I just don’t know what parts bent.
There’s a lot going on under there that could be wrong.

So once they stick it in the air and find out what mechanical bits need replacing it’s going to be totalled then?(it’s what I would want myself tbh!)

I’m still pretty confident of my estimate when they add in the mechanicals.

So what’s the over/under on the car getting written off?

They don’t take into account post-repair value. The 2014 WRX is holding its value very well. Retail value is $24-26,000. If the repair bill gets above $18,000 or so, they will consider totalling it.

Vindication!!!!
I really didn’t want to have to address that miscarriage of officiating at the post game presser! You know, being frowned upon and all that.

There will be another round where you can yell at the official. I know some of you really enjoy doing it and others enjoy watching. This humble servant recognizes when he makes a mistake.
But don’t you DARE question me if I’m right!!!! You’ll find yourself thrown out of the game!

The repair estimate doesn’t include any repairs to the rear suspension or drivetrain components
so then why did you make this post

The ball was already rolling. Besides, I have learned that this is the way it works - they provide an initial estimate then they revise it based on the shop tear-down.
Did you not have some fun with it? Or are you just full of sour grapes because you didn’t win?

Yeah, me too. I’ve already starting talking to my wife about trading it in. I just can’t stand the thought of going to a sedan.
Come on, Subaru, make a WRX Hatch for 2017!

I think three of my friends now have broken down and gotten a sedan, they’re terribly ugly but they drive fantastically.
I still recommend a Fiesta ST though!!!!

Unfortunately, it’s too small. I have two kids who must fit comfortably in the back. The kids went with me to test-drive a FoST and a WRX, back-to-back. All votes were for the WRX.

Yeah I’ve driven the FoST, the steering is considerably less good (blame the variable rack), and the car is much heavier, making hard to throw around, unlike the Fiesta.
Would much rather have the WRX over the Focus.
(get the RS tho)

There’s a white FiST that follows my morning route. I saw it again just this morning. Man, that thing is tiny .

Don't forget to have them include lost value if it's not totaled

Yep. I meet with them today to talk about the repair, lost value, replacing the tires, etc.

Prepare for a battle. Even when they admit fault they want to give you as little money as possible. Dunno if you’re going the lawyer route but they can be helpful.
Another trick they do is they'll send you a lowball check. If you keep/cash it they'll consider the case settled.

Know of any good tools for quantifying lost value?

No idea but wikihow has a thing on diminished value that would be a good starting point I'd think

The next edition is coming soon. I just heard the shop called in the adjusters to discuss a supplement.
